2011-12 British Sign Language (BSL) Clas

2011-12  BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL) CLASSES: LEVEL ONE

The classes offer an introduction to BSL and assume no prior knowledge.

They are of 24 week duration (not including school holidays) with each week consisting of a 2.5 hour session (a total of 60 guided learning hours).

There will not be any end of course external examinations. The course is divided into three units each ending with an internal assessment with your tutor (a one to one conversation for 4-5 minutes).

With Unit One, the tutor will carry out the assessment and marking.

For Units Two and Three, the tutor will carry out the assessment but the marking will be done externally by Signature (the governing body based in Durham).  All assessments will be part of the course hours and will be recorded on video/DVD. Students can progress on to the next unit without having to wait for the results of the assessment of previous units (these can take up to 8 weeks).

All students are required to complete and achieve in all three units within the 24 weeks before achieving the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.

Aim of Course:  To enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involves simple, everyday language use.  This specification is designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 1.

Unit One: BSL101 – Introduction to BSL – This unit equips learners to understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL grammar that is different to English.

Unit Two: BSL102 – Conversational BSL – This unit equips learners to take part in simple, predictable conversations or instructions in BSL grammar in relation to activities at home, e.g. using numbers, describing interests and commenting on the weather.

Unit Three: BSL103 – BSL at School, College or Work – This unit equips learners to take part in simple, predictable conversations or instructions in BSL grammar in relation to activities at work/school/college, e.g. describing the building, activities carried out, transport used, directions.

Our classes are run as a partnership between DeafVision and Carlisle College and as such students must enrol through college procedures and, to do this, a combined Learning Agreement and Enrolment Form must be completed.

You must be aged 16 or over on 1st September 2011 to enrol.

The course fee is £252.50 (this is all inclusive, covering tuition fees, course materials and Signature’s assessment fees).  Concessions are available at £180.70 for those in receipt of job seekers allowance or ESA (Work Related Activity Groups).  Class details are given on the booking form. Each class will be limited to a maximum number of students and these will be allocated on a strictly first come first served basis (except in some cases where places are reserved for family members of deaf children).
