The Royal Association for Deaf people

The Royal Association for Deaf people (RAD) exists to promote the welfare and interests of Deaf people (by which we mean deaf people whose first or preferred language is sign language).

RAD's Full Potential project is organising a 4X4 off-road jeep challenge for Deaf youths aged 11-17. No previous experience is required. The event takes place at Stubbers Adventure Centre in Upmiinster on 7th February 2009. Places are limited. _dsc6350.jpgA new  weekly BSL Level 1 course starts in Colchester on the 12th January 2009 and will run until 13th July 2009. Each class is two and a half hours long. The cost of the course is £340. Christmas_Baubles.jpgRAD's annual Christmas Carol Service for Deaf and Deafblind people took place at Chelmsford Cathedral on Friday 12th December. Over 400 people attended and enjoyed signed performances from local schools and BSL readings including one from RAD Trustee, Tomato Lichy. Next year's RAD Carol Service will take place on Friday 11th December.

dsc00795.jpgRAD's Full Potential team recently organised a successful weekend photography course in London. The event was attended by 11 Deaf youths, all of whom enjoyed learning new skills and making new friends. Colchester YMCA's Young Deaf Club has launched a new website for parents and guardians of deaf children aged 12 to 17, living in the Essex region: www.youngdeafclub-parentsgroup.collectivex.com

 

temp-logo-small.jpgFor the first time, Deaf BSL users living in England and Wales with a low income or receiving benefits can obtain free and confidential legal advice through a webcam with a broadband connection. Caseworkers are fluent in BSL, and will provide specialist advice at Community Legal Service Specialist Quality Mark level.

RAD Legal Services has been working in partnership with the Legal Services Commision and with the Significan't Ltd to develop the service.
